Modern and Open Living Kitchen

Project: Modern kitchen renovation
Location: Christchurch, New Zealand
Designer: Jonelle, Christchurch team
Our client in Christchurch wanted to transform their traditional, cramped kitchen into a clean, modern and open space that could comfortably host multiple people. Their brief emphasised refined, clean lines with details that stand out, hidden storage and appliances yet easy to access.
Jonelle from our Christchurch team designed this kitchen with precision, transforming a tight U-shaped kitchen layout into a spacious, open, and more inviting area. She blended timber grain alongside plain colours to create a modern, uncluttered space that feels larger.
Key Features & Material Selections
Main Doors | Prime Kitchens NZ Melamine - Concrete – Velvet: These doors provide a sophisticated, plain colour base. The velvet finish offers a soft, off-white hue, chosen specifically for the tall units to prevent them from overpowering the small space, maintaining a neutral yet modern aesthetic.
Secondary Doors | Melteca Melamine - Oiled Legno – Pure Grain: To introduce textural contrast and warmth, these doors feature a timber grain. This material was intentionally used with the grain running horizontally, a design choice to make the kitchen appear longer as this felt like a small space in the old kitchen
Splashback | Laminex NZ Laminate - Oiled Legno - Natural: The splashback material was chosen to match the timber colour of the secondary doors. This tied the kitchen concept together making it key to the modern and uncluttered feel the client was after.
Benchtops | 20mm Lucino Sandy Black: The Lucino Sandy Black benchtop contributed to the refined, clean lines. The intentional black benchtop added subtle negative detail under the bench to make the stonetop elevate off the units.
The kitchen that was once a cramped and traditional space turned into a modern and open space where multiple people can enjoy. The use of timber and natural colours created a space that felt inviting and open. Reflecting on the project, Jonelle shared. "I really enjoyed working on this kitchen to get a more modern layout and overall look for the clients. Making the kitchen much more a joy to work in compared to the old one which was so cramped.”
The clients thought the outcome was fantastic and were really happy with the extra time and dedication to get some difficult details correct, especially the window area.
